My Midlife Crisis
Hi, my name is Shanna Hunt. It was a beautiful, sunny day when my husband and I decided to take a walk on a breathtaking mountaintop near our home on an island. Little did I know, this day would hold an unexpected twist.
As we savored the views, I took a misstep and fractured my left ankle. At the hospital, the admitting doctor began the assessment, stating, 'A 50-year-old woman has sustained a hairline fracture to her left ankle.' It was at that moment I truly realized—I am indeed 50 years old."
"Suddenly, I began to question why this happened to me. Never in a million years did I expect to fracture a bone. Though the fracture healed after three months, I then developed plantar fasciitis in my right foot. These setbacks left me feeling invisible, and my self-esteem gradually began to diminish.
At that time, I didn't realize I was entering the perimenopausal phase, as I was still experiencing my menstrual cycle."
"During this time, I felt insecure and a bit embarrassed to discuss my experiences with my husband, despite knowing he would be supportive, caring, and kind about my transition. Eventually, I opened up to him. His unwavering support marked a pivotal step in helping me embrace this phase of my life"
I began researching Hormone Replacement Therapy, aware of its reputation as the most controversial treatment for menopause. My quest for knowledge extended to alternative treatments, and I even tried some complementary samples myself.
During this period, I also grappled with depression stemming from the need to pivot from my successful nursing career to a new path that I would enjoy just as much. This uncertainty about my future left me feeling insecure.
I fittingly called this transition in my life my 'midlife crisis.'"
